Overwhelmed by Life? It’s Time to Reclaim Your Control (And Your Joy)

Norma Slack

If you're feeling stressed, anxious, or perpetually behind, you're not alone. That heavy, sinking feeling - the one that makes you want to pull the covers up and stay in bed - that's overwhelm.

For those of us who are natural carers and feel drawn to help others, overwhelm is not just a mood; it’s a constant battle. However I have learnt that  it is a signal, not a sentence and you have the power to change it.

The True Definition of Overwhelm

We often think overwhelm happens when our to do list gets too long. But research and my own experience tell a slightly different story.

Overwhelm is when the things you feel you have no control over vastly outnumber the things you choose to do.

It’s not based on the sheer number of tasks; it’s based on the feeling that life is coming at you too fast. The deadlines, the essential care tasks, the financial worries, the endless needs of others, these are the passive challenges.

When this imbalance strikes, what’s the first thing we sacrifice? The activities we choose and enjoy: the quiet time, the walk in nature, the hour spent painting, the call to a friend. These are your active challenges.

By cutting out the very things that bring us joy, we reduce the number of areas we feel in control of, making the feeling of overwhelm even worse.

This is why the solution isn't to simply do less - it's to intentionally add back more of what you control.

My Strategy: Taking Ownership of Self-Care

During a challenging time in my life, dealing with intense grief and an unplanned caring role, I struggled with overwhelm. I desperately needed to feel in control of my life and emotions.

After a little research and a lot of reflection I decided on a set of small, daily changes. I instinctively started incorporating simple habits, like making sure I had my daily walk in nature, being mindful of what I ate, and taking time for reflection.

The important point is that I took control of a single thing, then another, and another. I was unconsciously embracing the fact that many of the small, simple acts of self-care we put off, like getting out in nature or choosing nourishing foods, are actually scientifically shown to be incredibly helpful in reducing stress and calming our nervous system.

I unknowingly was doing the right thing, and now I want to share the core principles that helped me find my way through. My breakthrough came when I realised I had to take ownership and responsibility for my self-care.
