The Path Ahead: Why the Best Discoveries Require a Little Faith

The Path Ahead: Why the Best Discoveries Require a Little Faith

The landscape doesn’t always give up its beauty easily; sometimes it asks for patience and a willingness to step into the unknown.

While in Wexford for my recent exhibition, we took the opportunity to explore the area. On one occasion we found ourselves in a small harbour town with a grassy path stretching out before us. We weren't entirely sure where it led, but we hoped it would be the beach so we decided to follow it. We assumed it would be a short, leisurely stroll, but as the path wound on, the "short stroll" began to feel like a journey into the unknown.

We passed others who had decided to turn back, their curiosity exhausted by the distance. Doubt began to creep in. Were we really on a path that would take us where we thought, and hoped it would.

But curiosity urged us to keep going. We were boosted by encouragement from a passing runner, and eventually, just as our hesitation peaked, we found our way: a gate, a steep bank of sand, and then the reward.

We crested the dune to find an expansive, glorious beach that belonged to us alone. The sound of the waves and the birds soaring overhead felt like a gift.

It was a discovery we never would have made if we had turned back when the path felt too long or the destination too uncertain.

The experience reminded me so much of the journeys we take in life and business. Whether it’s starting a new creative project, navigating a career shift, or simply trying to bring a painting to conclusion. We often reach a moment where there is no end in sight and the doubts start to whisper that it’s time to turn back.

We often want to know exactly how long the path is before we commit to the walk. But life rarely works like that.

The lesson I’m carrying into July is this: Keep going.

Even when you aren't sure where the path leads, trust the movement. Pay attention to the people you meet along the way, don’t be afraid to ask for help or direction and remember that the reward is often just around the next bend, waiting for you to crest that final hill. You will get to an end of some kind, and I promise, that achievement alone will be worth every step of the uncertainty.

Whatever path you are walking this month, I hope you find the courage to keep moving forward. The beach is waiting.
